Why Good Works Won’t Get You to Heaven—And Why We Do Them Anyway

March 31, 2025

Many people believe that being a good person and doing good deeds will earn them a place in heaven. This idea is common, but it is not what the Bible teaches. As Lutherans, we believe that salvation comes by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone—not by our efforts. Yet, good works still have a place in the life of a believer.

We live out our faith, knowing that good works are not a requirement for salvation but a response to God’s love. So why do we do them? Let’s explore the biblical foundation of salvation and the role of good works in a Christian life, as together we grow in faith as Lutherans in West Palm Beach.

Understanding Salvation and Good Works

Salvation Is a Gift, Not a Reward

One of the core beliefs of Lutheran theology is that salvation cannot be earned. Ephesians 2:8-9 states:
"For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast."

This passage makes it clear: salvation is a gift from God. We cannot achieve it through effort, good behavior, or religious acts. Jesus’ sacrifice would not have been necessary if we could earn our way to heaven.

Many struggle with this concept because the world teaches us that rewards come from effort. But God's kingdom works differently. Faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation—not church attendance, generosity, or moral behavior.

Good Works Are a Response to Grace

If good works don’t save us, why does the Bible discuss doing them? The answer lies in gratitude.

When we experience God’s love and forgiveness, our natural response is to live differently. Good works flow from faith, not as a way to earn God’s favor, but as a thankful response to His grace.

James 2:17 reminds us: “Faith by itself if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” This does not mean that works contribute to salvation. Instead, true faith naturally leads to action. A heart transformed by grace will want to serve others.

Faith Without Works? It’s Like a Tree Without Fruit

Jesus often used the imagery of trees and fruit to explain spiritual truths. In John 15:5, He says:
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing."

Good works are like fruit growing from a healthy tree. If the tree is alive, it will bear fruit. If it does not, the tree is either unhealthy or dead. Faith produces good works, but the works do not make the tree alive—God does.

As Lutherans, we do not do good works to be saved. We do them because we are saved.

Luther’s Struggle and the Truth of Grace

Martin Luther, the founder of the Lutheran Church, struggled with guilt and the idea that he had to earn God's love. Before his breakthrough, he tried to live a perfect life through fasting, confession, and strict obedience. But no matter how hard he tried, he always felt unworthy.

Then he read Romans 1:17: “The righteous will live by faith.” He realized that salvation comes not from human effort but from God’s grace. This truth changed his life and remains the foundation of Lutheran teaching today.

We are saved by grace alone, not by works—but works are evidence of a changed heart.

Living Out Good Works in Everyday Life

What is their purpose if good works don’t get us into heaven? They serve three key roles:

1. They reflect Christ’s love.

When we serve others, we show the world what Christ’s love looks like in action.

2. They strengthen our faith.

Serving, giving, and loving others draw us closer to God.

3. They help our neighbors.

Good works are not for God's benefit—they are for others.

Our actions matter, not because they save us, but because they reveal God’s love to those around us.

Growing in Faith as a Lutheran in West Palm Beach

The balance between faith and works can be difficult to understand, but the message is simple: Faith in Jesus Christ saves us, and good works are the result of that faith.

At First Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Palm Beach, we embrace this truth. We serve, give, and love—not to earn a place in heaven but as a response to the grace we have already received.
