“Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? John 4:11
The Samaritan woman looked at the physical situation—a deep well, no bucket—and couldn't fathom how Jesus could provide water. We often do the same. When facing overwhelming circumstances, we fixate on our lack of resources, our "shallow bucket," or the "deep well" of our problems, forgetting that Jesus does not need our conventional, human tools to quench our thirst, meet our needs.
The woman isn’t too proud to ask Jesus, "Where can you get this living water?". The surprise answer is that Jesus himself is the source. He doesn't draw from the world's supply; Jesus brings us new life from within.
When you feel drained, what are we tempted to do? We try to muster our own strength, try to do it ourselves. When we need peace, where do we go We often try to fill that thirst with stuff, with bad relationships, junk food, or some other quick fix. Instead, Jesus invites her to look to the One who offers a fountain of life within, overflowing with grace, joy, and peace that the world cannot provide. What is that fountain of life? It is having Christ in our heart, His Holy Spirit dwelling within us – filling and empowering us to live our life to the fullest.
That’s the promise we have in baptism – the gift of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 2:38“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
This Sunday we will be welcoming two new members, Heather and Jonathan Luzuriagga. We will also be baptizing their baby, Icarus, in which he will receive the promise of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit works to create, strengthen, and keep believers in faith, usually beginning at Baptism, and is sustained through hearing the Gospel. We often have sponsors (godparents) – other believers who will help support the parents in raising their child in the faith.
As we gather this Sunday – recall the promises of God in your own baptism, and reflect on how God is filling you with His Holy Spirit, giving you “living water” that satisfies our parched sin sick soul.
