FIRST WORD "Mommy's Here"

May 8, 2025

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.” John 10:27-28

A mother's love is a source of comfort and security for her children. This Mother's Day, consider the love of your mother and how it can mirror the love and protection Jesus offers everyone who follows Him.

A group of mothers were asked about the joys, challenges, and struggled they faced in motherhood. Perhaps some of their answers will resonate with you.

When asked about the greatest joys of being a mom, some said, “Watching my children make good choices and becoming who God created them to be.” Others said, “Watching them grow and discover their talents. Each stage of their life is precious and a wonder to watch.”

When asked about the challenges of motherhood, some remarked, “Letting my children learn from their mistakes… worrying about their safety… or wondering what kind of people they’ll become once they leave the nest.”

But the hardest question was: What was your biggest struggle in motherhood? Nearly everyone said the same thing: “Watching my children experience physical or emotional pain.”

Every mom has been there – that helpless feeling of watching your child sobbing with a broken leg or broken heart. Even a little scratch or bruise can send a mom to tears. Worse yet, a trip to the hospital over an injury or sickness can be enough to throw you into a panic. You feel so powerless, you would give anything to take their place. Right?

But you can’t. All you can do is hold them in your arms, wipe away their tears, and assure them that everything will be okay because, “Mommy’s here.”

Isn’t that also true about Jesus' love for you and me? We turn to God for a sense of peace and stability. That was certainly true for His followers. They needed to know that “Jesus’ here” in good and bad times.

On my vacation to help my brother with spring planting a few weeks ago, I stayed with my mother. She fed me and washed my clothes, just like I was a kid again. I helped do a few tasks around the house. We went to church together. It felt like I was ten again, or maybe twenty?

A lot has changed over the years. We’ve all gotten a bit older, grayer, and a little bit slower. But mom’s love has not changed. Hopefully you’ve had the experience of being loved by your mom or someone who could be a mother to you. We need them!

Everything that is holy, good, and beautiful in motherhood we find in Jesus. Just as mothers delight in the love and attention of their children, so the Lord delights in us. Like a mother, Jesus has the ability to nurture and to feed us. Like a mother, Jesus is relentless in his willingness to sacrifice for us – to protect us, to heal us, and to understand our unique quirks and shortcomings. That’s the love of a mother – it’s also the love of Jesus. Have a happy Mother’s Day!
