“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)
Athletes are in their element when they are finding joy in their abilities, working hard to sharpen their skills, and grow into the best athlete they can be. To be in your element, you must understand your purpose, practice your skills, find your position, and overcome pressure to reach your full potential.
That’s the theme of our Vacation Bible School next week. It’s called “In Your Element”, with a mega sports theme. Kids will learn from the life of Jesus’ disciple Peter what it looks like to be in your element.
Our VBS director, Kaitlyn Hallett, has pulled together an awesome team of over 20 volunteers from the churches and ministries onsite to serve in a variety of roles. I’m “Professor Zoom" – a bit of a crazy sports scientist to interject some silliness and creativity into the program. Pastor Jeremy is the “Rally Coach”, like a head coach who will emcee the opening and closing sessions. We have some wonderful song and snack leaders, huddle and sport coaches, safety and registration, Bible teachers, decorators and floaters. Next week will be incredible!
When you come to worship this Sunday you will see some of the decorations setup in the sanctuary. Be ready for some basketball, golf, frisbee, and even skateboards! Plus, with the sport science aspect, we have some test tubes, books, beakers, and magnifying glasses. It’s going to look a LOT DIFFERENT in church this Sunday!
Did you go to Vacation Bible School when you were a kid? What do you remember from it? I remember playing softball in the parking lot next to the cemetery. I remember doing crafts, eating a snack lunch, and sharing a program on Sunday. (We will have something to share next Sunday summarizing the week.)
For us, this is something NEW. It is a FIRST in many ways. It is a huge step of faith to even try to do this. As a church, we haven’t had VBS for years. This is our first try at working together like this with the other ministries - Centro de Avivamiento Cristiano – Revs. Esneik & Kissel Matos; Church of God Seventh Day of Palm Beach – Rev. Alva Donaldson; Holy Cross Ministries – Rev. Dr. Michael Breznen; Tabernacle Restoration – Rev. Frantz Beaubrun; The Light WPB – Rev. Jeremy Barahona; and Youth For Christ – David Killian. This is a community of churches!
It can take a few years to rebuild a tradition. So far our registration numbers have a lot of room to grow. This is a mission start, a vital area for growth for us, and for all the ministries onsite. Can we do this? Will it work? Please PRAY. INVITE. BRING your kids, grandkids, neighbors, friends. HELP, SERVE, and PRAY all week long. I can’t wait! May God be glorified in all we do.
In Christ;
Pastor Dan
