FIRST WORD 5.10.24 “Mothers Day”

June 30, 2021

Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12

In Genesis chapters 1-2 we hear the story of God’s marvelous creation – it’s a paradise! Sun, moon, stars. Earth, sea and sky. Fruits and vegetables. Birds, sea monsters, and other crazy critters. But what is the crowning jewel of his creation? Adam and Eve – us!

It says that the woman, Eve, was the final act of creation. God saved the best for last! God created the women with beauty in mind, to be delightful inside and out. God also gave her a beautiful purpose. For Adam, his purpose was to labor – to work the ground. But Adam could not procreate himself, plus it was lonely. While everything else was “good”, it was not “good” for the man to be alone. So God made him a helper – a mate, with together, they could be fruitful and multiply. That’s why we all have a mother!

As we celebrate Mother’s Day this weekend, I’d like to share a few quotes that I’ve saved over the years that I think will help us ponder motherhood and all its beauty and honor, as we thank them:

“Only women can be mothers. Have we forgotten this fundamental? Only a woman can carry in her body an eternal being which bears the very image of God. Only she is the recipient of the miracle of life. Only a woman can conceive and nurture this life using her own flesh and blood, and then deliver a living soul into the world. God has bestowed upon her alone a genuine miracle — the creation of life, and the fusing of an eternal soul with mortal flesh. This fact alone establishes the glory of motherhood. This is one reason why the office of wife and mother is the highest calling to which a woman can aspire. This is the reason why nations that fear the Lord esteem and protect mothers. They glory in the distinctions between men and women, and attempt to build cultures in which motherhood is honored and protected.”

“This Sunday is Mother’s Day. Lord, help us all to thank and forgive our mothers. We celebrate with those who enjoy great friendship with their moms! We grieve with those who have lost their moms to death or to broken relationships. We rejoice with those experiencing rich blessing in motherhood. We mourn with all women who desire children they have not had, those who have lost children to death, and with moms whose children are out of touch. God we thank you for all women and the many care-giving roles they assume, and the risks they take; bless them in their serving, may your grace and love be apparent to all they nurture.”

I hope these words help you reflect on motherhood and the mothers in your life. As the crowning act of creation, motherhood is something to be honored and appreciated. Thanks, mom!

In Christ;
Pastor Dan
