FIRST WORD "Faith"

October 4, 2025

Jesus replied, “If you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it will obey you. Luke 17:6

Most of us are familiar with this saying about the mustard seed. It is no accident that Jesus picks the mustard seen as an example of faithfulness here in Luke 17. Mustard’s reputation for being proverbially small (though not actually), is a wonderful example of how a seed sized faith is capable of accomplishing miraculous feats.

Elsewhere Jesus tells us to be salt to the world, to bring zing and zest of the Gospel message to the lives of others in everything we do. Similarly, mustard seed can bring a sharp, pungent spiciness and flavor to anything to which this condiment comes into contact, like hot dogs or hamburgers. Mustard makes the juices flow and our mouth water. It is alive, bursting with flavor and color. Mustard is never neutral or lukewarm – and neither should our faith be!

Jesus’ disciples had the wrong quality in mind when they asked Jesus to increase their faith. Faith is not about quantity; faith is about quality! Faith is spicy and full of flavor!

All this talk of mustard is making me hungry for a hot dog, how about you?. Jesus' parable about the mustard seed reminds us that we are to be to the world what mustard is to the hot dog - flavor and power. How will your faith be the mustard to the world this week?

In Christ;
Pastor Dan
