When Prayer Feels Empty: What to Do Next
There are times when prayer feels like an uphill battle. You may find yourself sitting in silence, unsure of what to say, or maybe you feel as though your prayers are bouncing off the walls. It’s natural to face moments where prayer seems empty, especially when life feels overwhelming or when you’re struggling with doubt.
At a Lutheran church in West Palm Beach, we understand that these feelings can be a part of the human experience, and you're not alone. If prayer feels empty, there are ways to reconnect with God, find strength in His presence, and continue your spiritual journey with hope and peace.

What You Can Do When You’re Struggling to Reconnect with God
Acknowledge Your Feelings
It’s Okay to Feel Like Your Prayers Aren’t Reaching God
It’s easy to feel guilty when prayer doesn’t seem to have the same impact as it once did. You might wonder if something is blocking your connection with God. But it’s normal to go through seasons of spiritual dryness.
Remember, God isn’t disappointed in you when prayer feels empty. He knows what’s in your heart even when you can’t put it into words. Acknowledging your struggle is the first step toward peace. God welcomes our honesty. Some of the most heartfelt prayers are simply saying, “I don’t know what to say.”
Allow Yourself to Be Still
Sometimes, emptiness in prayer comes from rushing through it. We approach prayer with urgency, wanting answers quickly. But God often speaks in stillness.
Try sitting in silence before God. Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and let go of expectations. Rest in the fact that He is with you.
Seek Scripture and Reflection
Finding Comfort in God’s Word
When prayer feels empty, turning to Scripture can be the best thing we can do. God’s Word is living and active, speaking directly to our hearts. Whether you read a Psalm, a verse of encouragement, or a passage about God’s faithfulness, Scripture brings renewed hope when prayer feels hard.
Consider verses like Philippians 4:6-7, which invites us to present our requests with thanksgiving, and promises that His peace will guard our hearts. Meditating on these promises restores confidence in prayer and reminds us of God’s constant presence.
Prayer Doesn’t Always Have to Be Words
When words fail, prayer can take other forms. Sitting with your thoughts or expressing feelings through music, art, or journaling are all ways to pray. God understands our hearts even when we can’t find the words.
Take a moment to reflect on your feelings each day. Write them down, sing, or simply hold them in your heart as an offering to God. The act of releasing your emotions to Him is a prayer in itself.
