When Faith Feels Easy: Are We Living in Cheap Grace?
Faith can sometimes feel simple—prayers said, songs sung, hearts uplifted. But beneath comfort lies an important question: Are we living in true discipleship, or have we grown too comfortable with what Dietrich Bonhoeffer called cheap grace?
At a Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in West Palm Beach, grace is central to the message. Yet, we are reminded that real grace is not easy or free from responsibility. It calls us to live faithfully and reflect the costly love of Christ.

Understanding Bonhoeffer’s “Cheap Grace”
Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a German theologian and martyr, coined the phrase “cheap grace” to describe faith without transformation—grace that forgives but never challenges. It is grace preached without repentance, baptism without renewal, and communion without confession. Cheap grace allows us to receive God’s mercy while avoiding obedience.
For Bonhoeffer, genuine faith is not comfortable. It’s a call to follow Christ even when it costs us everything. His life, marked by sacrifice and conviction, reveals the difference between knowing about grace and living it daily.
What Cheap Grace Looks Like Today
Modern Christianity often emphasizes love and acceptance, both of which are true and necessary. Yet grace becomes cheap when it excuses disobedience or complacency. When faith stops changing how we live, serve, and love others, it becomes self-serving. We risk turning faith into a mere convenience rather than a genuine commitment.
Jesus never called His disciples to an easy path. “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Faith is meant to stretch and shape us. Cheap grace avoids that process, offering comfort over conviction.
Costly Grace: The True Gift
Grace is free, but not without cost. It cost Jesus His life and calls us to offer ours in return—not through earning salvation, but through living in gratitude and obedience. Bonhoeffer described costly grace as the treasure hidden in a field, worth selling everything to obtain.
Living in costly grace means surrendering our pride, forgiving freely, and serving humbly. It recognizes that God’s love transforms us. We don’t work for salvation. We work because salvation has changed us. Faith without this response is hollow.
Faith That Transforms
True grace produces fruit. When faith feels too easy, it may be time to examine whether it’s transforming us from the inside out. Real discipleship leads to service, generosity, and compassion. It prompts us to forgive when it’s hard and to love when it’s inconvenient.
Transformation begins when we accept that faith involves struggle and growth. Every act of obedience, every prayer for patience, every effort to love difficult people are all signs of costly grace at work in us.
Living Grace in Community
We are not meant to walk this path alone. The Church exists to help believers grow, correct one another, and encourage each other in their faith. Through worship, teaching, and fellowship, we experience the grace of God in action through community, accountability, and love.
We hold fast to this truth. Grace is the heartbeat of our shared life in Christ. Together, we celebrate forgiveness while striving toward faithful living. In community, grace deepens, and faith becomes tangible.
