Christ the King Sunday is the last Sunday of the church year, a day to celebrate Jesus's reign and sovereignty over all creation. It marks a transition from the end of the liturgical year to the beginning of Advent, prompting reflection on Christ's nature as a king who rules with mercy, forgiveness, and compassion, and who calls followers to live according to his values. This day also serves as a reminder that God is ultimately in control, and prepares believers for the coming of the King during the Advent season.
- Luke 23:1-6
Jeremiah’s promise of the execution of “justice and righteousness in the land” finds ironic fulfillment in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. It appears utterly contradictory that a king should be crucified with a criminal. This victory appears for all the world as humiliating defeat. Yet through the gate of death Jesus opens the door to paradise.
